New York has an intense passion for creativity, and many of its places to stay are nothing short of spectacular. During my time living in this high-octane city, I discovered everything from quirky boutique hideaways to fun party hotels – here are my favorite ultra-unique spots…
1. Hotel on Rivington
I was honestly in awe of this 4‑star boutique tower! With its striking glass architecture and wraparound floor-to-ceiling windows offering jaw-dropping skyline views, it perfectly combined edgy Lower East Side energy with sleek, modern luxury – to me, it felt urban, stylish, and effortlessly cool.
I stayed in a King Studio which featured an ultra-luxe Tempur‑Pedic king bed complete with Frette Italian linens, hardwood floors, a flat-screen TV with on-demand viewing, and a spa-like bathroom complete with organic toiletries, a lush rainfall shower, and an all-glass corner enclosure that showcased breathtaking Manhattan views – this was my favorite detail!
I also loved its stylish rooftop spaces which had incredible skyline views, its trendy cocktail bar, the complimentary daily grab-and-go breakfast, and the Kin Gin izakaya restaurant which served up Tokyo-meets-NYC small plates and artisan sake. I also loved the Insta-worthy sky-lit atrium!
I found it perched in Manhattan’s vibrant Lower East Side and I really enjoyed being just steps from the Delancey/Essex subway and a short walk to SoHo, the East Village, and iconic spots like Katz’s Deli.

2. YOTEL
I had fun staying in this sleek, tech-forward 4-star urban hotel that stood out for its ultra-modern, space-saving “cabins,” robotic luggage concierge (YOBOT), and futuristic vibe, just steps from Times Square! It felt like a stylish spaceship-meets-city-pod made for tech-savvy, on-the-go travelers, with a fun, fast-paced atmosphere at an affordable price.
Inside, I found the decor was ultra-modern and minimalist with glossy white surfaces, purple mood lighting, modular furnishings, and cool space-age accents that gave it an awesome sci-fi look.
I stayed in a Premium Queen Cabin featuring an adjustable SmartBed™, mood lighting, flat-screen TV, compact desk, free Wi-Fi, and a sleek glass-enclosed monsoon shower with high-end Urban Jungle toiletries – all packed into a cleverly designed, high-tech layout. Being a bit of a geek, I loved all the smart touches!
My other favourite highlights included automated check-in kiosks, self-service amenity machines on each floor, a 24/7 gym, and a rooftop terrace that doubled as a lively restaurant and nightclub – with skyline views and the funky Green Fig restaurant which served up creative Mediterranean fusion dishes.
It was located in Midtown Manhattan, so I was handily just a short walk from Times Square, Hudson Yards, and the Theater District.

3. Moxy NYC Chelsea
I discovered and stayed at this stylish, budget-friendly 4-star boutique hotel in Manhattan’s Flower District, and loved its vibrant blend of industrial-chic design, a rooftop bar with 360° skyline views, and its Insta-worthy lobby that doubled as a botanical oasis.
Outside, the slender 35‑storey concrete-and-glass tower rose 420 ft above 28th Street. Inside, I loved how the vibe felt youthful, energetic, and playful. It was stylish but with an urban edge and social, party-friendly atmosphere. The upscale service was surprisingly personal and never too intimidating, for me it struck the perfect balance!
My King Room featured a space-efficient design with floor-to-ceiling windows, a smart TV with Netflix, an air purifier, a lush walk-in rain shower, and chic minimalist decor. I especially loved the retro-style rotary phone that doubled as a cheeky wake-up call system, and how the fold-down pegboard furniture added a clever, space-saving twist.
Wandering through the hotel, I discovered a glass-enclosed rooftop lounge with panoramic views (including the Empire State Building), a lobby bar filled with floral installations, an Italian trattoria by TAO Group, and fun nightly events – there were even drag bingo nights and DJ sets!
I also really liked its location in Manhattan’s Flower District – it had a lively, colorful buzz, was within walking distance to the High Line, Penn Station, and the Empire State Building, and had eclectic markets, art galleries, and cafés right outside the door.

4. Standard High Line
I had an awesome stay at this trendy, high-rise 4-star boutique hotel in NYC’s Meatpacking District – it stood out with its bold, elevated design that straddled the High Line, panoramic skyline, river views, and a lively social scene with rooftop bars and buzzing nightlife.
Inside, I found sleek modern decor with a retro twist: mid-century furnishings, warm wood tones, floor-to-ceiling glass, and playful, risqué art accents throughout. I loved the edgy, fashionable, and hedonistic vibe – it attracted a stylish crowd drawn to its rooftop parties and downtown cool-meets-artsy sophistication.
My guest room (a Standard Double Room) featured floor-to-ceiling windows with stunning river views, a minimalist open-plan layout, a funky platform bed, retro-modern furniture, and a fully exposed glass-walled shower right next to the window – definitely not for the shy!
I also discovered other great amenities which included the iconic rooftop nightclub Le Bain with its plunge pool and disco ball, the chic Standard Grill restaurant, a scenic outdoor biergarten, and even a seasonal ice rink under the High Line (though it wasn’t open during my stay).
I thought the location was just so much fun – it was right in the heart of the Meatpacking District, directly above the High Line and steps from the Whitney Museum, Hudson River Park, and some of NYC’s trendiest boutiques, bars, and restaurants.

5. The Box Hotel
This stylish 4-star boutique property was one of the most endearing places I’ve stayed in the city! I thought it was a real hidden gem, set in a converted Brooklyn factory with loft-style suites and lashings of original local artwork.
Inside, I adored its funky industrial-chic decor – there were exposed brick and beams mixed with vintage furnishings, and bold colors. The vibe felt creative, cozy, and distinctly Brooklyn managing to be both homey and hip (which wasn’t an easy to pull off)!
My Loft Suite had the look of a cool Brooklyn apartment, with high ceilings, hardwood floors, a fully equipped kitchen, a cozy living room with a sofa bed, a 42″ flat-screen TV, air con, and even a private sauna (which I loved)! I especially liked the quirky retro touches such as the super-cute vintage rotary phone.
I also made use out of its vintage Checker cab which offered complimentary neighborhood rides, the cozy onsite Brooklyn Lantern restaurant and bar, and its small fitness center which came complete with a sauna.
I thought its location in Greenpoint added to its charm – it had a quiet, artsy neighborhood vibe with easy subway and ferry access to Manhattan, as well as lots of cool cafés, creative spaces, and scenic waterfront parks right on my doorstep!

6. Hotel Hugo
I knew this stylish 4-star boutique tower in Hudson Square/SoHo deserved a spot on this list for its sleek industrial-meets-mid-century design and two Insta-worthy rooftop bars which offered incredible Hudson River views!
I thought the decor was exceptional – it mixed raw materials such as polished concrete, steel accents, and vertical garden planters with warm mid-century furnishings, custom woodwork, and colorful contemporary art – creating a chic SoHo-meets-loft feel with a touch of boho. It felt stylishly sophisticated yet relaxed, and I saw that the fashionable, creative crowd couldn’t get enough of it!
My Superior King Room featured floor-to-ceiling windows, an oversized leather-accented platform bed with plush Frette linens, a sleek glass-enclosed rainfall shower, flat-screen TV, minibar, and custom walnut furnishings. I especially liked the striking bathroom, which featured Italian mosaic tiles and luxe Argan bath products.
I totally fell for the twin rooftop bars with panoramic river views, the elegant lobby lounge, and Café Hugo – an Italian restaurant which came with sidewalk patio tables.
Located in Hudson Square between SoHo and the West Village, I loved how it felt tucked away yet was just steps from downtown’s best boutiques, art galleries, restaurants, and the scenic Hudson River Greenway.

7. Arlo SoHo
I was completely won over by this chic 4-star “micro-hotel” in Lower Manhattan’s Hudson Square/SoHo area for its clever space-saving design, vibrant rooftop bar, courtyard, and social, design-savvy vibe.
I loved the sleek, modern interiors – it was stylish mash-up of warm walnut millwork, black metal and glass partitions, bold art, and cleverly built-in furniture designed by AvroKO. The vibe felt hip, youthful, and sociable, with co-working and communal spaces that were perfect for mingling.
My King Room featured a space-efficient layout with a comfy extra-large bed, built-in storage, a mini-fridge, rain shower, floor-to-ceiling windows, and minimalist design touches. I especially liked how the full glass garage-style window opened onto a small private terrace which was perfect for sipping on my morning coffee while gazing at the city views.
My other favorite features included the buzzing rooftop bar, cozy library with ergonomic armchairs, 24-hour artisan pantry Bodega, and complimentary bikes too!
I found the hotel perfectly placed in Hudson Square near SoHo and Tribeca – within easy walking distance of downtown’s trendiest shops, eateries, and the scenic Hudson River Greenway. Staff also mentioned it has a cool sister hotel, Arlo NoMad, in Manhattan’s creative NoMad neighborhood.

8. The Jane
I thought this historic, quirky budget boutique micro-hotel in Manhattan’s West Village was such a unique find! Set in a landmark 1908 building, it felt like an underrated gem thanks to its vintage ship cabin–style rooms, rich Titanic-era history, and Wes Anderson-esque decor!
I thought interiors looked both nostalgic and whimsical, with vintage maritime touches, dark wood paneling, antique furnishings, brass fixtures, and playful, unconventional design details. The vibe was quirky, bohemian, and retro – mixing old-world eccentricity with creative downtown energy and a splash of theatrical flair thrown in!
My guest room (Captain’s Cabin with a private bathroom) featured vintage-inspired decor, a queen bed, brass fittings, a rainfall shower, flat-screen TV, and charming nautical accents—I especially loved the porthole-style mirrors that made the whole space feel like an ocean liner suite!
My other standout highlights included the moody chandelier-lit ballroom bar and lounge, complimentary vintage-style bikes, its rooftop which had Hudson River views, and the onsite Jane Restaurant, which served up a hearty – and locally famous – American brunch.
Being in a great location was another huge bonus for me – it had a charming, tucked-away setting just steps from the Hudson River, the High Line, and trendy Meatpacking District nightlife.

11. Hotel Alameda, Highline
I ended up having a real soft spot for this stylish 61-room 4-star boutique hotel in Chelsea – I was really taken with its mix of sleek minimalist design and vibrant Latin American art, which was paired with standout social spaces and awesome urban views!
Inside, the decor was warm and earthy, with natural materials, handcrafted Latin American accents, and curated contemporary art that gave it a stylish yet soulful ambiance. The vibe felt creative, laid-back, and design-forward, attracting art lovers, trendsetters, and curious travelers alike.
My Deluxe Room featured a plush king bed on a reclaimed wood platform, handcrafted furnishings, a walk-in rain shower, floor-to-ceiling windows, a flat-screen TV, air con, and beautiful woven textiles. I especially liked the cozy, hand-woven floor rug!
I also enjoyed making use out of the trendy vinyl listening lounge which came with a vintage record collection, its hip rooftop bar with incredible skyline views, its cozy Mediterranean courtyard, and its onsite boutique which sold artisanal goods.
Its location in upscale Chelsea, just steps from the High Line, also meant I was within easy walking distance of art galleries, stylish restaurants, and the lively Meatpacking District.

12. Made Hotel
I honestly felt like I’d made it when I stayed at this modern, design-forward 4-star boutique hotel in NoMad! It earned its place on this list for its seamless mix of raw industrial design and warm natural materials, paired with creative social spaces and superb skyline views.
The decor was a beautiful mix of minimalist-industrial style and earthy textures – there was reclaimed wood, raw concrete, handcrafted ceramics, and lashings of lush greenery. The vibe was hip, creative, and effortlessly cool, and I saw that the other guests included a mix of design lovers, digital nomads, and culture seekers.
My Standard King Room featured a floating king-size platform bed adorned organic linens, floor-to-ceiling windows, sleek minimalist furnishings, and a rain shower. I especially loved the hand-crafted artisanal touches – the stunning carved stone sink was a real standout!
I also stumbled across the on-site Paper coffee shop, the rooftop tiki bar Good Behavior with skyline views and craft cocktails, and a buzzing communal lounge space that doubled as a creative hub for the NoMad crowd.
I thought the location was a huge bonus too – it was right in the heart of NoMad, with easy access to the Flatiron District, Madison Square Park, and plenty of great dining and shopping spots.

13. Dream Downtown
This sleek 314-room 4-star lifestyle hotel in the Chelsea/Meatpacking District really was a dream to stay in! It stood out with its Insta-worthy porthole-covered façade, rooftop lounge with skyline views, and its dramatic glass-bottom pool which floated above the lobby!
I found futuristic and edgy decor with a nautical-industrial twist – there were metallic finishes, porthole windows, mood lighting, and sleek modern furnishings throughout. The vibe was bold, energetic, and ultra-social, attracting nightlife lovers, trendsetters, and partygoers.
My King Room with Pool View featured a plush king bed with Egyptian cotton linens, modern metallic accents, and a sleek bathroom with a rainfall shower. I was actually in awe of the large porthole window which offered a surreal view of swimmers floating in the glass-bottom pool right above me!
I also enjoyed making use of the chic rooftop lounge PHD with skyline views, the glass-bottom pool with cabanas, the moody Electric Room nightclub, a man-made “beach” area with a seasonal Beach Club, boutique shopping in the lobby, and its several trendy dining spots.
I thought the location was ideal – tucked between Chelsea and the Meatpacking District, so I was within easy walking distance of the High Line, Chelsea Market, art galleries, and some of NYC’s hottest nightlife.

14. Henn na Hotel
I was totally charmed by this fun and modern robot-staffed 4-star hotel chain! Its standout feature was the robot staff- including dinosaur receptionists and AI concierges – paired with futuristic tech making it one of the most playful and innovative hotel experiences in the world!
I discovered the decor was minimalist and utilitarian, with clean lines, neutral tones, and simple patterned wallpaper. The vibe was quirky, futuristic, and surprisingly calming – once the novelty of the robot staff wore off, it felt like a peaceful but modern retreat!
My Deluxe Double Room featured two comfy double beds, smart lighting, voice-activated room controls, a tablet interface, air purifier, and a sleek minimalist layout. I especially loved the LG Styler robotic wardrobe, which steamed my clothes automatically, and the cheeky animatronic robot assistant which resided by my bed!
Other quirky features I was in awe of included the robotic luggage carriers, multilingual AI concierge services, facial recognition room entry, the modern fitness center, and the on-site Japanese restaurant.
The location was also a major perk – I found myself just a short walk from Penn Station, Madison Square Garden, Macy’s, Herald Square, and Times Square.

15. Freehand Hotel
I was head over heels for this hip, design-led 4-star boutique hotel in Manhattan’s Flatiron District. It felt more like a cultural hub than a hotel, with rooms designed by local artists, a funky rooftop bar, cool social lounges, and creative events that I thought gave it a truly unique edge!
I loved that during the roaring 1920’s the building was once a favorite hangout for writers, musicians, and artists and the decor today paid homage to that history. I saw vintage-inspired craftsmanship including restored millwork and leather armchairs combined with playful murals by Bard students and cozy homey touches.
The overall look was warm, eclectic, and full of character, and to me, the vibe felt artsy, youthful, and social which attracted an eclectic mix of travelers, creatives, and locals.
My Premium King Room was a good size and featured a plush king-size bed, custom vintage-style furnishings, locally inspired artwork, a smart TV, soundproofing, and large windows that filled the space with light. I especially loved the hand-painted mural above the bed – it made me feel like I was staying inside a creative studio!
I also made sure I enjoyed the vibrant Broken Shaker rooftop bar, the all-day café and co-working space Studio, the fun games room, and its restaurant which served globally inspired comfort food. They even hosted regular art-focused events.
I found that the Flatiron District location was perfect for me – it was just steps from Madison Square Park, Union Square, and multiple subway lines for exploring the rest of the city.
