Where was ‘Down Cemetery Road’ filmed? Behind the scenes of the latest Apple TV hit
Down Cemetery Road is Apple TV’s latest nail-biting series, with Emma Thompson, Ruth Wilson, Adeel Akhtar, Darren Boyd and Nathan Stewart-Jarrett among the all-star cast keeping viewers on the edge of their seats.
The eight-part series premiered on the streaming service on Wednesday 29 October and is scheduled to come to a head on Wednesday 10 December. The show is based on the 2003 novel by Mick Herron, following the success of the 2022 adaptation of his novel Slow Horses. Many fans of the original format argue the series, adapted for screen by Morwenna Banks, is well overdue.
The first episode sets the scene in leafy Oxford, where Ashmolean Museum conservationist Sarah Trafford (Ruth Wilson) and her husband Mark (Tom Riley) have a few friends – the term is used loosely – over for dinner. As the group convene, an explosion rocks the neighbourhood. Sarah notices a mysterious man watching as a five-year-old is taken by ambulance, pulling her into a world of private investigators (one of whom is played by co-lead Emma Thompson) and espionage as she gets caught up in a world entirely out of her comfort zone.
While much of the series is set in and around the world-famous university city of Oxford, location managers opted to shoot around Bristol – dipping in and out of various other locations across the UK in between. Here, we take a quick glance at where Down Cemetery Road was filmed.
University of Bristol
Any graduates will be in for a nostalgic treat as they recognise some of the University of Bristol’s landmark buildings in the background of the series. Nationwide student news platform The Tab reported filming in the area in June 2024. While the production team declined to comment when approached, local sleuths worked out what was going on as 60Forty Films transformed the Arts and Social Sciences Library into a filming location.
The Clyde Arms, Bristol
The Tab’s coverage reported filming at The Clyde Arms in Bristol. According to The Tab, “An onlooker tried to ask the crew at the pub what they were shooting for, but they refused to give any information. The production team was said to be “causing a bit of rush-hour chaos” whilst filming.”
