Long anchored by its wineries, Napa Valley has evolved into a broader cultural destination, where notable culinary experiences, design-led hotels, and serious wellness programs now stand alongside its vineyards.

That evolution has also shaped where travelers choose to stay. Downtown Napa remains convenient and central, but for our Hotels We Love guide to the region’s best retreats, we focus on properties outside Napa proper that feel more deeply embedded in the valley’s wine-growing communities, including such charming small towns as St. Helena, Calistoga, Rutherford, and Yountville.

These 11 luxury hotels offer farm-to-table dining, substantive wellness experiences, and for serious wine travelers, exclusive partnerships or direct connections to nearby wineries.

Alila Napa Valley

In 2021, the former Las Alcobas Napa Valley transitioned into Alila Napa Valley upon joining the Hyatt portfolio. The name changed, but the property’s character—a sleek, modern-feeling retreat with views of the surrounding vineyards—remains intact.

The center of the 64-room hotel is a Victorian mansion dating to 1905. Meticulously restored, it now houses Violetto, an intimate restaurant led by award-winning executive chef Thomas Lents. The tasting menu, inspired by northern Italy and southern France, highlights Napa produce with such menu items as house-made pastas, composed salads, and duck confit. Guests can also join for à la carte snacks in the lounge and bar or on the beautiful, wraparound veranda (don’t miss the chickpea panisse).

A private bridge connects the hotel with the adjacent Beringer Vineyards, giving guests exclusive access to tastings at the historic winery. There’s also an outdoor pool and bar at the center of the property, a serene spa, and complimentary bikes. While the property itself seems secluded, it’s within walking distance of downtown St. Helena.

Auberge du Soleil

The 50-room, adults-only Auberge du Soleil sits on 33 hilly acres above Rutherford, surrounded by nothing but vineyards and wildland—truly an escape from everything down below. Postcard views of the Valley abound from any of the pergola-topped patios and terraces attached to the suites and private mansion. And although you’ll feel a world away from it all, many iconic wineries, such as Opus One, are less than a 10-minute drive from the property.

Guest room amenities include outdoor tubs or showers; elsewhere on property, Auberge offers plenty to do for an entire weekend, whether you’re hitting balls at the tennis courts, walking through the sculpture garden, getting some sun by the on-site pool, or dining at the recently renovated restaurant. From the lobby, guests have easy access to an entire network of hiking trails that wind through majestic redwoods.

Bann at Oak Knoll Napa

In the heart of the Oak Knoll district, Bann at Oak Knoll Napa reflects chef Lalita Souksamlane’s Thai culinary and design sensibilities—translated into a three-room, resort-style bed-and-breakfast. Souksamlane, known for her Osha Thai restaurants in San Francisco, decorated each of the rooms in dark woods and tile and textiles from different regions of Thailand. All accommodations have lofted ceilings and bell-shaped light fixtures that reference traditional Thai forms. Each morning, guests are served a three-course Thai breakfast with such items as Thai rice soup with egg and shrimp.

A small saltwater pool and hot tub overlook the nearby vineyards. With advance booking, Bann guests can reserve a nine-course chef’s table dinner that showcases some of Souksamlane’s most intricate preparations, including complex curries and lemongrass-driven dishes.

Bardessono

Bardessono is widely regarded as one of Napa Valley’s most environmentally rigorous hotels. The design-forward resort is one of only seven U.S. hotels to hold LEED Platinum certification, reflecting stringent standards for energy performance, water use, and materials.

The 65 guest rooms use concrete floors for thermal efficiency, and all have steam showers and private patios or balconies that feel like mini sanctuaries. A rooftop pool sits above the swanky-but-approachable Lucy restaurant and bar, which offers some of the best views of Yountville. An underground geothermal system heats and cools the guest rooms, spa, and domestic hot water supply.

Early in 2025, the team also introduced the N/A-pa Concierge, a program designed for sober and sober-curious travelers. The concierge can set up itineraries that eliminate alcohol, ranging from wellness sessions and hot-air balloon rides to cooking classes and dinners—useful for groups with varied interests.

Four Seasons Resort Napa Valley

Set on a working vineyard in Calistoga, Four Seasons Resort Napa Valley offers 85 generously sized rooms and suites with built-in storage, gas fireplaces, and soaking tubs; most are arranged across two low-rise buildings that look out onto the surrounding vines.

The property’s culinary program is led by Rogelio Garcia, a Mexico City native whose résumé includes kitchens under chefs Douglas Keane and Thomas Keller, along with an appearance on Top Chef. Garcia oversees Auro, the resort’s one Michelin-starred fine-dining restaurant, as well as the more casual Truss and Campo, an elevated Mexican cantina by the pool.

Auro’s tasting menu shifts weekly, reflecting seasonal availability. Winter might bring sunchoke velouté, Maine lobster with fennel, or 100-day dry-aged Flannery Beef with bok choy ravioli; spring menus often highlight heirloom tomatoes, king salmon, or other regional produce. Wine pairings are calibrated to the valley’s varietals and are a defining part of the experience.

Indian Springs Resort & Spa

The northern Napa Valley town of Calistoga is known for its healing mineral spring waters—they’re what brought 19th-century author Robert Louis Stevenson to the area. For modern-day wellness seekers, one of the best places to stay is the family-owned Indian Springs Resort & Spa, which has two large spring-fed pools and a spa that offers mud baths. While private tubs are available at the spa, the best way to enjoy Indian Springs’ pools is to grab two pool noodles and float in the warm water.

The main pool, built in 1913, is open until 10 p.m. and is family friendly, while a separate adults-only pool has a more tranquil vibe. The 116 accommodations vary from spacious adults-only rooms in the Lodge buildings to modernized circa-1930 cottages ideal for families. The resort is a five-minute walk to downtown Calistoga and has a popular on-site restaurant in Sam’s Social Club that serves a seasonal menu.

Since Calistoga is on the northernmost end of the Valley, a stay here is a great opportunity to visit some less-crowded but nonetheless high-caliber wineries such as Stonestreet Winery (technically in Sonoma) or Davis Estates.

Meadowood

In St. Helena, Meadowood is composed of 36 rooms and suites designed by noted Napa architect Howard Backen. Accommodations combine rustic simplicity with sumptuous elegance. Most have vaulted ceilings and wood-burning fireplaces. The spa was renovated in 2015 and remains the only all-suite facility in the Napa Valley. Since then, it has become one of the Napa Valley’s go-to spots for wellness. Signature treatments incorporate different elements from the area: soil, flowers and herbs, and grape leaves.

In addition to treatment suites, the Tree House Retreat specialty room offers another private space in the spa. Partly open to the elements, the room includes a fireplace and a hand-hammered copper tub for a custom bath that features such regional elements as milk, mustard, and sea salt. Meadowood offers a variety of signature massage treatments and nine different facial treatments—including two for men.

Although it’s a stone’s throw from dozens of world-renowned wineries, the hotel also has a Wine Center on site for those who prefer to learn more about the region’s wine-growing tradition without leaving the stunning property.

Poetry Inn

Set on a steep hillside overlooking vineyards and the Silverado Trail, Poetry Inn manages to be both secluded and well positioned for exploring Napa Valley’s wineries and towns. The suite-only property has five poet-themed rooms—refreshed in 2021 by Erin Martin Design and embellished with hand-painted murals by artist Michael Duté.

Each suite includes a private patio, a soaking tub, and an outdoor shower oriented toward the valley. Sunset is a highlight: All rooms face west, giving guests unobstructed evening views.

Breakfast is a lavish spread of seasonal pancakes, shakshuka, and other rotating dishes—served either in-room or on the open-air patio. A small outdoor pool and on-site spa treatments add to the quiet atmosphere, and staff can arrange private tastings at Sullivan Rutherford Estate, a boutique winery under the same ownership. Service is a defining feature; the team handles everything from sunset cocktails to dinner reservations with a level of care that consistently elevates the stay.

The Setting Inn

Grapevines grow practically right outside the windows at The Setting Inn, a five-room bed-and-breakfast with an adjacent private cottage between Napa and Yountville. Rooms have wooden floors and large beds with antique headboards, while bathrooms are filled with natural light. The remodeled 1901 farmhouse and cottage both sit between two separate Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards owned by a private producer who sells to many big labels.

Linger in your room over a breakfast of warm chocolate croissants and flaky kouign-amann from Bouchon Bakery in town, then take one of the inn’s electric bikes and ride west on Hillview Lane past acres upon acres of vineyards. Later, sample Napa Valley and Oregon wines at a private tasting of award-winning elixirs from the inn’s wine label, The Setting Wines in the Barn, which doubles as a communal lounge for guests.

Solage, Auberge Resorts Collection

Part of the Auberge Resorts Collection, Solage is composed of 100 modern-feeling suites and studios designed with concrete floors, showers with rock floors that massage your feet, private patios, and bicycles for use around town. Solbar became Calistoga’s first restaurant to receive a Michelin star back in 2010.

Though the restaurant lost its Michelin star in 2021, chef Gustavo Rios continues to deliver an unforgettable culinary experience. He builds dishes around what’s ripe and ready to eat—as a result, his menu is famous for having some of the most vegetarian- and vegan-friendly dishes in Napa Valley.

That said, the petrale sole fish tacos are famous for a reason, and locals swear by the Reuben with house-made corned beef. On warm days, the expansive patio is a welcoming spot to linger over lunch (or cocktails) with friends.

Stanly Ranch, Auberge Resorts Collection

In April 2022, Stanly Ranch debuted on 712 acres in Carneros. The resort, part of the Auberge Resorts Collection, comprises 133 cottages and suites. Most accommodations have sliding glass doors that lead to a private patio with daybeds for whiling away the afternoon. While here, don’t miss a meal at the restaurant Bear, which offers seasonal Californian dishes like bison tartare and grilled peaches with burrata.

Wellness fanatics swear by the resort’s Halehouse Spa. Specialists are on hand to customize experiences with emphases on hydration, nourishment, sleep, and movement. In most cases, plans incorporate a massage with herbs grown and sourced locally. A circuit program (featuring a cold plunge, tepidarium, and saunas) integrates contrast techniques to optimize physical performance and improve health. A movement studio offers HIIT classes, outdoor experiences, physical therapy, and more. Never to be outdone, the spa pool delivers memorable views of San Pablo Bay.

Although tempting to never leave, it’s worth venturing out for a wine tasting at nearby Donum Estate, which also has an impressive sculpture collection with pieces by such notable artists as Yayoi Kusama.
