US President Donald Trump said his administration has made “tremendous progress” towards ending the war in Ukraine and directed his special envoy to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.
“The original 28-point peace plan, which was drafted by the United States, has been fine-tuned, with additional input from both sides, and there are only a few remaining points of disagreement,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Tuesday.
Trump said he would meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Putin “only when the deal to end this war is final or in its final stages.”
He directed special envoy Steve Witkoff to travel to Moscow while US Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll will meet with a Ukrainian delegation.
The president claimed 25,000 soldiers died in the past week, adding the war “would have never started if I were president.”
Rubio: Talks ‘very worthwhile’
Trump’s statement follows high-stakes talks in Geneva last weekend between top US and Ukrainian officials aimed at discussing the peace plan, which sparked concern among European allies who viewed it as heavily conciliatory to Moscow.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who led the US delegation, said the talks were “very worthwhile” and constituted the most productive days in a “very long time.”
“I feel very optimistic that we can get something done,” Rubio said. “This is a very delicate moment. Some of it is semantics, or language. Others require higher-level decisions and consultations.”
The leaked 28-point blueprint initially sparked alarm in Kyiv and European capitals. Zelenskyy has said his country could face a difficult choice between standing up for its sovereign rights and preserving a key ally, but asserted that Ukrainians “will always defend” their homeland.
