Where is hot in May? 15 destinations for spring 2026

We start pondering where is hot in May, the start of the season for many corners of Europe, way before the month comes around. As summer fades and the winter approaches in a baubley-blur of festivities, we keep one eye firmly on the next summer, when many of our favourite destinations enter their balmy prime. Aside from the school half-term, May is a great time for an adults-only escape across the globe, especially at seasonal hotels that offer considerably lower rates just after reopening, compared to July and August. In Greece and Cyprus, for instance, the shoulder season means fewer crowds, plenty of space even on more popular beaches to lay a towel, and a lower chance of being turned away from the bucket-list restaurants you’ve saved across your social media feeds.

Where in Europe is hot in May?

In May, much of Europe starts to warm up. You’ll find temperatures above 20℃ in Greece, Spain, Italy and the South of France. Go further south, and you’ll be treated to even hotter days – on Turkey‘s Turquoise Coast, the average May temperature is 27℃.

Is Greece warm in May?

Greece is one of the most popular destinations to visit in summer – but if you want to squeeze in a visit before the peak season starts, the days are long, sunny and warm in May, too. Below, we recommend the island of Antiparos (average temperature 20℃), but in Rhodes, you can expect highs of 23℃, Santorini has highs of 22℃, and Samos has highs of 25℃. Inspired?
