Where is hot in June? 7 ideas for an early summer escape
Where to stay: We’re big fans of OKU Kos for an adults-only escape, with its boho-chic charm and remote(ish) location. For a rustic, boutique Dodecanese escape, unwind at The Old Markets on Symi.
Los Angeles, USA
June in Los Angeles is hot – but not hot enough to make attempts at exploring the city, and not just the beaches, redundant. June is also a fantastic time to see Los Angeles’ party spirit, with the national holiday of Juneteenth on 19 June and Pier 360 bringing music, food, and ocean sports competitions to Santa Monica. LA Pride turns the streets into a kaleidoscopic playground on the second weekend of June, while established and up-and-coming talent come together for the Hollywood Bowl Jazz Festival around the middle of the month.
Where to stay: The Beverly Hills Hotel is the bucket list stay for many in these parts, as jetsetters check in for poolside lounging in the hopes of spotting a superstar or three.
Athens, Greece
The Greek capital has well and truly wangled its way back into the spotlight over the past decade, armed with a world-class bar scene, countless exceptional restaurants, and a smattering of smart hotel and resort Openings. Many locals will scoff at the idea of sunning it up along the Athenian Riviera – and who can blame them, with a smattering of islands within easy reach that feel a world away from home for a weekend. But there’s a lot to be said for Athens’ proximity to the coast, tempting travellers away from the must-see historical attractions and art galleries after a few sticky days. If the thought of tagging a few days of fly-and-flop onto bucket list sites under the scorching sun appeals, Athens is for you.
Where to stay: In town, The Modernist is a refreshingly modern base from which to explore the ancient sites. One & Only Aesthesis is the sleekest address along the Riviera, credited with re-igniting interest in this corner of Greece’s dazzling coastline after more than half a century.
