According to a study, Iceland is Europe’s most relaxing destination, based on factors like crowd density and wellness offerings that include its famous hot springs.
Stress and burnout can really do a number on a person, and that’s why it’s critical to regularly schedule breaks to get away from it all. But not just any break—you should plan a trip to one of the most relaxing places in the world.
Specialist booking site BookRetreats’ Holiday Relaxation Report, released in December 2024, showcases the best destinations for travelers to find total peace and quiet. For its analysis, the team examined 76 destinations and assessed them based on nine data points: the percentage of protected areas in the country, forest coverage, crowd density, noise and light pollution, peacefulness, and total wellness experiences. It then gave each destination a score of one to 100 to reveal its top picks. After looking at all the data, it named Iceland as Europe’s most relaxing holiday destination.
“Not only does the island have the best peacefulness score globally, but it also leads all destinations for the serenity category in our report,” BookRetreats stated in its results. “In between its vast natural landscapes, Iceland has just one major city and several sleepy towns, placing first for low noise and light pollution. These pristine dark skies make it one of the best places to witness the spectacular northern lights.”
Additionally, the report noted that Iceland has a rather low population density, ensuring everyone can find plenty of space to call their own for total relaxation—and that includes on the roads. “Icelanders spend an estimated 21.35 minutes in traffic one way, compared to 59.99 minutes in Costa Rica,” BookRetreats added.
Book Retreats also pointed out that the nation is home to abundant wellness offerings to help you unwind further from day-to-day stress. The country is crawling with hot springs and spa retreats, like the famed Blue Lagoon and Sky Lagoon.
As for other top destinations for relaxation, the team named Australia its top pick in the world, thanks to its gorgeous natural landscapes and low population density. Canada followed in second place, with Iceland, Finland, and New Zealand rounding out the top five.
