UK passport holders granted visa-free access to China: everything you need to know
UK passport holders will no longer require visas for short-term stays in China, it was announced on Thursday 29 January 2026, following a string of successful talks between the UK’s Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, Chinese President Xi Jinping and other officials.
The two leaders have covered considerable ground during talks in Beijing, with mutual benefits for travellers and businesses announced in Downing Street statements.
A new relationship is set to grow partnerships between the nations, “across government and business in the healthcare, financial and professional services, legal services, education and skills sectors.”
One of the most interesting developments is an end to the long-standing visa programme that has previously lured UK jetsetters to alternative destinations. UK passport holders may now enter China for under 30 days visa-free, aligning with citizens of countries including France, Germany, Italy, Australia, and Japan.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer said, “As one of the world’s economic powerhouses, businesses have been crying out for ways to grow their footprints in China. We’ll make it easier for them to do so – including via relaxed visa rules for short-term travel – supporting them to expand abroad, all while boosting growth and jobs at home.”
Further agreements signed in Beijing include the Establishment of a Bilateral Services Partnership, Exports from the UK to China, and a Co-operation on Food Safety, Animal, and Plant Quarantine.
