This Is the Most Expensive Vacation for U.S. Travelers in 2025

As Americans examine their travel budgets for the rest of 2025, one destination has emerged as the most expensive.

The African country of Rwanda is the priciest destination for American travelers this year, according to a report from Faye Travel Insurance. In fact, the study found travelers who head to the East African country are spending an average of $18,417 per trip.

Most known for its incredible gorilla trekking, Rwanda also offers several other wildlife spotting opportunities from the chance to see wild chimpanzees in Nyungwe National Park to looking for the Big Five in Akagera National Park. The country’s vibrant capital of Kigali also welcomes travelers with a robust arts culture, an abundance of locally-made gifts, the chance to learn about Rwanda’s history, and more.

African countries dominated the list of pricey destinations with the Seychelles coming in second place thanks to an average trip cost of $15,775. Botswana, which boasts an average cost of $15,619, came in at No. 3, followed by Kenya at No. 4 with an average cost of $15,251, Namibia at No. 6 with an average cost of $14,147, Zimbabwe at No. 8 with an average trip cost of $13,925, Tanzania at No. 9 with an average cost of $13,092, and South Africa at No. 10 with an average cost of $12,725.

Beyond Africa, the company noted journeys to Antarctica tended to be pricey. The average trip to the 7th continent costs $14,491, firmly planting it as the fifth most expensive destination. There are several ways to visit Antarctica, including cruises and flights to the white continent.

While many of these trips are once-in-a-lifetime experiences, the company said trips to Europe were still the most popular choice for American travelers in 2025. In total, 75% of the insurance company’s customers planned trips there with Italy, France, and the United Kingdom drawing the most people. On average, Americans heading to Europe spend $5,832 per traveler.

Other popular destinations included Mexico, Germany, and Spain. Many people are also planning trips closer to home with the United States taking the No. 7 spot on the list of the most popular destinations in the world. And with amazing national parks, varied cities dotted across the country, incredible beaches, and more, it’s not hard to see why.

To determine its list, Faye Travel Insurance looked at data from thousands of travelers who booked and insured their trips through the company for 2025.
