La Paneteca
On Saturday mornings when the local craft market is thronged with visitors, there’s a queue out the door at this bakery-café, which reopened a few years ago in a sparkling new locale on Lajares’s busiest corner. Its organic sourdough, gluten-free cakes, lunchtime bocadillos and tostas are much in demand, as well as what may be the best croissants on the island.

Imperfecto GastroBar
Jacopo Olivini, originally from Milan, bakes baos and gyozas at this hole-in-the-wall gastrobar in Corralejo. The prawn tempura bao comes stuffed with guacamole, fresh mango and crunchy onion.

El Gusto
Thanks to its large Italian population, Fuerteventura is prodigal with proper gelaterias. El Gusto in Corralejo is reckoned to be the best. Fabulous ice creams and sorbets veer toward a classic Italian style while showcasing local ingredients such as gofio and goat’s milk.

Restaurante Cofete
Cofete might be known as “the beach at the end of the world”, but it still has a basic restaurant in the Mad Max-style surroundings of a ramshackle off-grid settlement high above the sands, where voyagers can sip Aperol spritzes ahead of a hearty lunch of traditional dishes such as fish soup, goat stew and chips, or limpets a la plancha.

Where to shop in Fuerteventura

Lapa Studio
A quartet of women, all outsiders with an artistic background and a deep love of Fuerteventura, came together to create this clothing and accessories shop in El Cotillo: painters Bili Puig de la Bellacasa and Greta Chicheri, Finnish designer Julia Puranen, whose bags and textiles have a Nordic air, and Cris Girona, who makes leather bags and accessories under the Canary Vibes and Valonia brands. While focused on their own creations, the group also showcase work by other local designers.
