This Austrian city feels like it’s been plucked straight from the pages of a festive fairytale and I loved every minute we spent there.
From late November, Salzburg Christmas markets fill the city’s squares with wooden chalets, lebkuchen, handmade decorations and the sound of carols drifting through the crisp Alpine air. It really doesn’t get any more Christmassy.
Whether you’re heading there to shop for gifts, indulge in tasty treats like raclette and glühwein, or, like me, fill yourself with festive feels, Salzburg delivers a Christmas market experience that’s equal parts magic and authenticity.
In this guide, I’ll share everything I learned from our visit, from the best Salzburg Christmas markets to visit and what to buy and eat, dates, times and local tips for making the most of your festive break. I hope you have as wonderful time as we did.
Salzburg Christkindlmarkt

The historic Salzburg Christmas market takes place on Domplatz and Residenzplatz Square in the heart of the Altstadt UNESCO World Heritage Site. This historic location and the traditional market stalls make Salzburger Christkindlmarkt one of the best Christmas markets in Austria.
The modern Salzburg Christmas Market has been held in the same city centre location for over 50 years, but the market’s origins stretch back to the late 15th century. By the 17th century, the Advent market had been named the Nikolaimarkt or Saint Nicholas’ Market, as it ran for two weeks before and after St. Nicholas’ Day on 6th December.

Nowadays, the modern Salzburg Christkindlmarkt runs from the Thursday before the first Sunday in Advent through to New Year’s Day. It’s one of the largest Salzburg Christmas markets and you’ll find around 100 traditional stalls selling a fabulous selection of handmade gifts and traditional decorations. Foodies will love trying delicious Salzburg and Austrian specialities and stands serving spiced hot punch and Glühwein.
The festive atmosphere is completed by choral sing-alongs, Christmas storytelling sessions for children, traditional Krampus parades, plus visits from the Salzburg Christ Child and angels. It’s a magical event, not to be missed!

Charitable Advent Market at the Alter Markt

The Old Market in Salzburg’s charming old town has been the go-to spot for shoppers since way back in the 13th century. And for the past 25+ years, it’s been home to a really special Advent market that’s all about giving back.
When you visit the Old Market in the heart of the old town during Advent, you’re not just enjoying the festive atmosphere, you’re actually helping a good cause. The advent market here is run by volunteers from local charities and organisations with over 60 different groups helping out.
So, every mulled wine you sip and every little bauble you buy goes toward a good cause. The market is organized by the Lions Club Salzburg Mirabell, and it’s their way of spreading some extra holiday cheer where it’s needed most.
Travelbunny tip: If you’re in Alter Markt pop into Café Tomaselli for a hot drink and pastry. It’s a Salzburg institution which has been trading for over 300 years and a must-do when in Salzburg.
