A New Boutique Hotel Is Coming to the Platinum Coast of Barbados
Barbados is getting a major new boutique hotel. A long-awaited transformation is underway on Paynes Bay in St. James. The Blue Monkey Hotel and Beach Club, a new luxury boutique property, is set to bring a fresh vision to one of Barbados’ most prestigious coastlines.
The intimate hotel, located on the island’s celebrated Platinum Coast, will debut following a full renovation and retrofit of a property that has been closed since 2008. Once home to the Tropical Escape Hotel and the original Blue Monkey Bar, the site has been reimagined as a destination that blends contemporary design with Barbadian coastal character.
Notably, it’s also already a pre-opening member of the Leading Hotels of the World portfolio.
The redevelopment is being led by VARCHi Design + Build. The project preserves the property’s enviable location on Paynes Bay while introducing a new architectural language and updated amenities designed for modern travelers.
The Blue Monkey aims to distinguish itself through its scale and positioning. Rather than a large resort, it will offer an exclusive, design-driven experience in a sought-after neighborhood known for some of the island’s most upscale accommodations and private residences.
Blue Monkey will feature 28 all-suite accommodations, each designed with a focus on modern luxury and thoughtful details. Suites range from 720 to 1,060 square feet and include fine Italian linens, custom furnishings by Pianca, Puntotre and Roberti Rattan, and spacious bathrooms with double vanities and walk-in showers.
Select suites will offer private plunge pools and powder rooms, while all will include Smeg and Nespresso appliances, complimentary minibars, 65-inch smart TVs, and in-room tablets for digital engagement. Separate living areas and pull-out couches make the spaces ideal for both couples and families, and five-star service rounds out the boutique experience.
A centerpiece of the hotel will be its culinary program. The signature restaurant, Amara, will reinterpret Lebanese cuisine through a modern lens, adding a new gastronomic perspective to Barbados’ dining scene.
Guests will also be able to enjoy multiple food and beverage venues, including the Blue Monkey Beach Club, the Blue Bar, and a rooftop lounge designed for sunset views and evening cocktails overlooking the Platinum Coast.
In addition to its leisure focus, the Blue Monkey Hotel & Beach Club will position itself as a stylish venue for events. From intimate weddings on Paynes Bay Beach to private social gatherings, the property’s scale and setting are tailored for both celebration and exclusivity.
The redevelopment signals renewed investment in the Platinum Coast, reinforcing its status as the island’s luxury hub.
It’s not bookable — yet. While an exact opening date has not yet been announced, the project is expected to welcome its first guests sometime in 2026. Blue Monkey is one of two major new hotel developments currently anticipated on Barbados’ Platinum Coast, joining the forthcoming Pendry Barbados, which is also targeting an opening in the coming years. Together, the two projects underscore growing momentum in the island’s high-end hospitality sector.
