Behind the scenes of Condé Nast’s latest celebratory supper with Penfolds
Plump truffle, potato, and mushroom dumplings were paired with the silky, dark-fruited Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 2023. In a stroke of genius, Penfolds chose to serve its following two wines together: the 2023 and 2013 Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignons. One of their top icon wines – the grape Penfolds is best known for – this was a unique opportunity to taste both vintages side by side and see how this luxury wine ages over a decade.
Both were delicious, with finesse and power to match the 21-day-aged Angus Scotch beef wellington with truffle jus and creamy mashed potato. In 2013, however, the wines were really singing, a reassuring indicator for anyone buying these wines now.
For the cheese course, guests headed back to France to try the V22 FWT 585 Red Blend. This opulent Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot cut through the aged English cheddar perfectly.
Small glasses of Grandfather, a rare tawny with a minimum blended age of 20 years, paired with Bob Bob Ricard’s signature Chocolate Glory, a golden globe that melts into thick, dark grenache. The sweet, nutty, raisin-rich fortified wine was a perfect finale to a fantastic supper, but that certainly did not mean the night was over, as guests enjoyed the wine, music, and conversation long into the evening.
