Best places in the UK for a Christmas break, as chosen by our features editor

I may be biased, having never lived anywhere else, but I think the UK is one of the most magical places in the world to spend a Christmas break. Cities sparkle under the glow of twinkling lights, mammoth Christmas trees grace the halls of every hotel lobby and country pubs are aglow with crackling fires. Whether you’re looking for a Christmas break filled with endless shopping sprees and feasts at some of the UK’s best restaurants or hoping for a more crowd-free, countryside escape, below we’ve rounded up the ultimate places in the UK to spend Christmas this year.

Cotswolds

This quintessentially English region is picture-perfect in any season, but there’s something particularly magical about the Cotswolds at Christmas. The windows of the honey-hued houses glow from candlelight, pubs are jam-packed with locals huddling up by crackling fires and, if you’re lucky, snow covers the rolling hills like a fluffy quilt. Windswept walks along the Cotswolds Way are a must, stopping off in small villages en route to refuel at cute cafes along the way or to visit independent stores for a spot of last-minute present shopping.

Where to stay: For the ultimate winter retreat, Thyme is the place to be. Not too far from the chocolate-boxy village of Southrop – with its manicured gardens and farmhouse aesthetic, it’s the perfect place to hole up for a decadent festive break. London

It doesn’t get much more Christmassy than London in December. The city centre is a treasure trove of festive magic – stroll along Regent Street to see the twinkling angels hovering overhead before popping into some of the shops decorated with baubles and tinsel galore. There are plenty of wintery activities to do, from maze-like markets selling everything from steaming hot chocolate and hot toddies to stocking fillers and fairytale decorations.

Where to stay: A stay at The Ned is bound to boost festive cheer. Inside, glittering decor adorns each and every corner, from the towering Christmas tree at the hotel entrance to the live band belting out Christmas carols in the evenings.
