The Venetian Well

The best young cooking talent on the island is concentrated at this restaurant at the very heart of the old town. Chef and owner Yiannis Vlachos transformed this spot from a mediocre bar to one of the finest dining establishments in Corfu, delivering Corfiot flavours redefined. Now the team also includes Spyros Agious, who’s becoming well-known on the island for his championing of native ingredients. Set in a pretty pink square just behind a 16th Century church, with tables dotted around an old Venetian well, this is a spot to head to for a special occasion or a romantic evening. The taramosalata here is as light as a mousse, and the rooster pastitsada spiked with plenty of cinnamon is an ode to Corfu’s culinary heritage. AM

Cake Boutique

Angeliki Agathou is Corfu’s resident Dessert Queen. Her Cake Boutique sits off a main street in Corfu town, but those that chance upon it are never disappointed. Lined up like precious treasure in a jeweller, her mini chocolate mousses, tarts and macarons sit behind a glass panel, waiting for the sweet-toothed amongst us. At Cake Boutique, produce is sourced from the island and often from friends of Agathou. Take the olive oil used for olive oil and lemon macarons, which comes from Dr Kavvadia’s Organic Farm, just twenty minutes away. If there’s a wedding or celebration to be had on the island, this is really the only woman you want for your cake. AM

Papagiorgis

For gelato, the century-old, family-run Papagiorgis Gelateria reigns supreme. Just off the famous Liston esplanade, on a busy pedestrianised walkway at the heart of town, Papagiorgis often has lines out the door throughout even the slower winter months. Don’t be phased, the wait is well worth it. Best sellers here are the chocolate kumquat (incredibly rich and also vegan) and Corfiot wild strawberry sorbet. The millefeuille here also nods to Napoleon’s stint on the island and also features wild strawberry jam, should you want to sample beyond the gelato stand. AM
