Christmassy London delis guaranteed to make you feel festive
Whether you are filling a stocking or sourcing ingredients for Christmas recipes, there is something undeniably enjoyable about buying foodie bits from local London delis at this time of year. It is a real indulgence to browse these tempting larders – and there is something filmic about plucking a Christmas pudding or ripe clementine from a speciality store, knowing it has been chosen for its superior provenance and quality.
Shelves are piled high with carefully selected items from small producers, Christmas songs hum in the background, and staff are usually on hand with tasty samples to try – it makes food shopping at this time of year a treat rather than a chore. Pick up a plump panettone from iconic Italian corner shop Lina Stores or head to Farm Shop to buy the best of British produce, all sourced from their sustainable Bruton-based farm. Independent delis can be found in most neighbourhoods. You’ll often discover wholesome brands that care deeply about the products they make, and will, in turn, add something a bit special to your table this festive season.
Lina Stores, Soho
Now known for their group of pasta restaurants across London, the original Lina Stores deli opened on Brewer Street in Soho in 1944, named after the founder Emilio Crippa’s wife, Lina. Traditional and charming, this turquoise corner shop exudes festive fun and is stacked high with Italian treats, from freshly made pasta to chocolate Baci kisses. There is surely nowhere better to pick up a pandoro or panettone – the selection here is unrivalled, from traditional to Limoncello or Amarena Cherry. There are also gluten-free and vegan options.
Panzer’s, St John’s Wood
An institution for good reason, Panzer’s has a seemingly endless store cupboard of varied food items sourced from around the globe. Whether you are looking for an obscure fruit (finger limes and miniature avocados) or an unusual biscuit (iced German biscuits from Wicklein), chances are you’ll find it at Panzer’s.
There is everything to complete your Christmas to-do list – from brussels sprouts to a gingerbread house kit to entertain the kids during the holidays. When you’ve exhausted the aisles, their Circus Pizza is a must-try.
Lulu’s, Herne Hill
It may be small, but Lulu’s (the sister to Llewelyn’s restaurant next door) keeps Herne Hill well stocked with independent food brands and gifts. The tiny corner shop has to be selective with its range, as there isn’t much room inside, especially alongside their tempting salad, sandwich and coffee offerings. When so much Christmas shopping feels overwhelming, Lulu’s makes it a manageable and enjoyable experience. For the lazy shopper, there’s even a range of pre-made boxes available – from ‘Stocking Stuffers’ to ‘Festive Snackers’.
The deli is teaming up with Botivo drinks to host a Christmas singalong on 7th December – a merry opportunity to shop, sing and snack.
The Deli Downstairs, Victoria Park
East Londoners are very protective of The Deli Downstairs, a much-loved delicatessen and café near Victoria Park. Wander through the twinkling arch to a sprawling display of seasonal surprises – all of which celebrate quality and craftsmanship. You’ll find a huge range of products here, and their Christmas selection is second to none… soft and delicious Perbellini Panettone, Mumbai-founded bean to bar East Chocolate, and Vault Vermouth – from an independent modern aperitivo distillery specialising in English wine-based spirits.
It’s also a good one-stop shop to find festive décor and gifts – the hand-dipped beeswax candles make a great present or add them to your table setting on Christmas Day.
Ottolenghi, across London
Adorned with ribboned wreaths by Hamish Powell, Ottolenghi was one of the earliest on the high street to put out their decorations this year, spreading Christmas cheer throughout November. Once inside any of their six London delis, a warm atmosphere emanates from the staff and set-up.
Towers of cakes and meringues are accented by festive bakes: Yotam’s Christmas cake, nougat, panettone, Christmas puddings and mulled wine, all wrapped and ready to go home with you. Many of the branches also have a seating area so you don’t even have to wait to feast on Ottolenghi’s delicious creations.
Farm Shop, Mayfair
Hailing from Somerset, Farm Shop is a taste of the West Country in Mayfair. The Somerset outpost sits within the 1000-acre Durslade Farm, all part of the Hauser & Wirth empire. Farm Shop in London is a welcome addition to the bustling city. Upstairs, bountiful basketfuls showcase vegetables and fruits grown in their walled garden, honey from their own hives and wines from Durslade Vineyard. The shelves stock store cupboard innovations – Fermented Cranberry Hot Sauce and Boxing Day Curry Sauce are sure to add vibrancy to any festive leftovers. Sweet tipples and treats, including Winter Spiced Negroni and Chocolate Enrobed Orangettes, make brilliant stocking fillers. Downstairs, a casual dining space is a welcome refuge from Christmas shopping.
