The Kawaii Monster Café Is Coming Back!
Get ready for crazy color like you’ve never seen before — unless you visited the Kawaii Monster Café back in the day. This winter, Kawaii Monster Land is set to open in Harajuku. It’s a new entertainment complex that carries on the legacy of the “kawaii chaos” café.
The Kawaii Monster Café, a themed restaurant with shows, was one of Harajuku’s most popular attractions from its opening in 2015 until its closure in 2021.
While the café is gone forever, its successor, Kawaii Monster Land Harajuku, is expected to have the same vibes — but with more, and dare we say, even better entertainment, including rides. The theme is “a rediscovered underground amusement park once hidden beneath Harajuku”, which really says it all.

What to expect at Kawaii Monster Land Harajuku
Celebrated artist Sebastian Masuda, the name behind the original Kawaii Monster Café and a key figure in Harajuku kawaii culture, is the producer of the new Kawaii Monster Land too. So you can expect the place to be legit.
We aren’t sure what exactly will be on offer, but we know there will be sweets-themed rides (ridiculously cute desserts were a big part of the original Kawaii Monster Café), pretty food, as well as “playful interactive games” and lots of general “kawaii chaos”.
And the OG “Monster Girls” — performers dressed in candy-inspired outfits — will be back, hosting live shows and making guests feel at home in wonderland.
Where will Kawaii Monster Land Harajuku be?
Location-wise, Kawaii Monster Land Harajuku will be on Takeshita Street, in the basement of the former Harajuku Alta building — now known as Takeshita Street Square. It is a two-minute walk from JR Harajuku Station.
The venue will span roughly 403 square meters. The exact opening date has yet to be announced, all we know is it is scheduled for winter 2025.
Event alert: If you can’t wait until winter, swing by the Kawaii Monster Café anniversary party on August 28.
The Kawaii Monster Land Harajuku project is a collaboration between Asobisystem (a Harajuku-based cultural-production company) and Genda Gigo Entertainment, known for their work in Japan’s arcade and amusement industries.
