Less than 1 percent of the world’s population has ever run a marathon. Only a mere 23,260 people have completed all six World Marathon Majors. But now, thanks to a new giveaway, you can be one of the few.
In honor of the 20th anniversary of the Abbott World Marathon Majors, the marathon organizers have teamed up with their official tour operator, Marathon Tours & Travel, for the World Tour giveaway, which offers one very lucky runner guaranteed entry to every race—and a few other perks to boot.
“For 20 years, the Abbott World Marathon Majors has celebrated the very best of global marathon running—iconic races, extraordinary cities, and inspiring runners,” Dawna Stone, the CEO of Abbott World Marathon Majors, shared in a statement. “The World Tour competition captures the very essence of that spirit. By offering one runner the opportunity to experience every Major and to tell some inspiring stories along the way, supported every step of the way by ourselves and our fabulous partners at MTT, this will be a true celebration of the global running community.”
So, yes, this means if you do win, you’ll have to actually run the Tokyo Marathon, Boston Marathon, TCS London Marathon, the BMW Berlin Marathon, the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, and the TCS New York City Marathon. But when you’re done, you get a really cool medal.
But you won’t just win entry. You’ll also get support with accommodation and a $10,000 travel budget to get you to all these places. And while these Majors are the stars, the winner will also receive entry to the newly qualified Abbott TCS Sydney Marathon. And, if the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon and Shanghai Marathon are confirmed as Majors, the winner will get entry to these, too.
“This is the most exciting prize we’ve offered in our 46-year history. As the official tour operator for the Abbott World Marathon Majors, we are proud to make this possible,” Jeff Adams, the president of Marathon Tours & Travel, added. “The World Tour is about more than just racing—it’s about connection, culture, community, and the powerful stories that unfold when you travel the world through running. We cannot wait to see who steps forward to take on this incredible journey.”
Entering is absolutely the easiest part of this journey. All you need to do is post a video to social media answering the question, “Why should you go on the World Tour?”
Marathon Tours & Travel added that applicants are encouraged to be as creative as possible, “whether that’s showcasing a curiosity for global running culture, a passion for community, an ability to capture emotion on film, or a talent for bringing places and people to life.”
It also noted that the competition wants to hear more about the stories you’ll be able to tell along the way, “not in the speed of your finish times. This means that applicants do not need to be elite athletes or chasing personal bests—what matters most is a genuine love for running, people, and storytelling.”
In your post, just make sure to tag @wmmajors and @marathontours using the hashtag #WorldTour, and follow both.
A judging panel, which includes Aubrey Mvula, a Six Star finisher-in-waiting, set to receive his medal in Tokyo this March, and Liz Newcomer, an 11-time marathon runner, will then select the winner. See all the details about the competition on the Abbott World Marathon Majors website. And then maybe buy some new running shoes just in case.
