Tokyo Train Fares To Rise in Spring

Tokyo Train Fares To Rise in Spring

From March 2026, it will cost more to ride Tokyo’s central Yamanote Line and other trains on the JR East network. The company — officially known as the East Japan Railway Co. — has announced its first broad price increase since 1987.

Ticket prices are expected to increase by about 7.1%, on average, with the starting fare going up from ¥150 to ¥160 on the Yamanote Line.

You’ll still be able to save a couple of yen by using an IC card rather than a paper ticket — with the same increase for the cards around ¥9.

The cost of tickets for the Shinkansen on the JR East network, as well as other regional trains, will also go up in March.

JR East says the price increase is required to fund maintenance and safe services, in the context of a declining population, increase in remote work, and other factors like broad price increases, including electricity.

While the price change may be felt by tourists, it is local residents who will bear the brunt with commuter passes going up as much as 22% in some areas.
