What Is The New “Autumn Unlimited Ride Pass” for Japan Trains?

The Japan Railways (JR) Group has announced the release of its annual “Autumn Unlimited Ride Pass” — but what can you do with it?

The seasonal rail pass offers unlimited travel — for three consecutive days — on local and rapid JR trains around the country. It is priced at ¥7,850 (¥3,920 for children), and will be sold from September 12 to October 17, 2025. You can buy it at major JR stations and travel centers.

The Autumn Unlimited Ride Pass also covers BRT lines operated by JR East and JR Kyushu, as well as the Miyajima Ferry in Hiroshima. Note, however, that it does not cover Shinkansen lines. And if you want to take a special Limited Express, you will need to pay for your seat.

Mount Fuji Day Trip with Private Driver

Spend a day exploring Mount Fuji and the area around it with this private, fully customizable tour – from all around Kawaguchiko Lake and up to the Mount Fuji Fifth Station.

Here’s the biggest catch: the Autumn Unlimited Ride Pass is only valid for travel from October 4-19. What that means is you only have a two-week window to use it. In short, the pass offers great value for money, but it does require a bit of prior planning!

The Autumn Pass is similar to the Seishun 18 rail pass, another discount ticket sold seasonally for travel around Japan. However, the Autumn Pass is cheaper.

Optional Hokkaidō Shinkansen ticket

You can also buy a discounted Hokkaidō Shinkansen ticket add-on to use with the Autumn Pass. This provides a single one-way trip on the Hokkaidō Shinkansen between Shin-Aomori and Kikonai, followed by a ride on the South Hokkaido Railway from Kikonai to Goryōkaku.

This ticket has the same sales and validity period as the Autumn Pass, and costs ¥4,650 for adults and ¥2,320 for children (5 and above).
