Where the chefs eat: Yasmin Khan’s favourite restaurants in San Francisco
Zuni Café
Dish to order: roast chicken salad
“This, for me, is quintessential San Francisco in some ways; it’s a really old restaurant. It’s classic, but modern in European style, and with those seasonal, organic California ingredients, it’s a San Francisco institution. It’s infamous; you can’t just turn up, so you have to book a long time in advance. However, I always try to make the effort to get there when I’m in town.”
La Taqueria
Dish to order: vegetarian tacos with beans, rice, cheese and avocado
“La Taqueria in the Mission district, one of the oldest in San Francisco, serves California cuisine with a Mexican influence. This is the first place I visit when I arrive in California. There are several outlets of La Taqueria across California (they also have restaurants in Long Beach, Garden Grove, and Wilmington), so fans from across the state – and, of course, lovers of burritos and tacos – come here.”
Hog Island Oyster Company
Dish to order: 12 oysters and a glass of bubbly
“Hog Island Oyster Company is located in the city’s ferry building. It is a beautiful food market, and also home to this restaurant. There’s nothing better than eating oysters right on the water like that. Sit outside looking at the water and you can see the bridges over into Marin County. Happy hour is every Monday to Thursday, 5pm-7pm – that’s the best time to go.”
Reems California
Dish to order: hummus, baba ghanoush and za’atar-filled flatbreads
“This is, again, more of a casual place, which I adore. The great thing with California, and especially in San Francisco, is you’ve got loads of really different types of cuisines. The chef at Reems is Palestinian-Syrian, and she’s amazing. The round, tall flatbread is her speciality and I always order that. The food is vibrant and delicious.”
