Where was The Night Manager filmed? Behind the scenes of the thrilling second series
On Location peels back the curtain on your favourite films, television shows, and more. This time, we look into the world of The Night Manager.
Series one of The Night Manager had the nation hooked when it hit TV screens in 2016. The series, based on the 1993 novel by John le Carré, took us on a jet-setting adventure as former British soldier Jonathan Pine (played by Tom Hiddleston) went from becoming the night manager of a Cairo hotel to infiltrating the inner circle of arms dealer Richard Roper.
The adaptation won 36 awards and won 11, leaving viewers begging the question – where’s the second helping?
Thankfully, our prayers have finally been answered, and we reunite with Jonathan Pine, now living as Alex Goodwin, as he runs a quiet surveillance unit for MI6 in London. However, a chance sighting of an old Roper mercenary prompts a call to action and leads Pine into a violent encounter with a new player: Colombian businessman Teddy Dos Santos.
Pine’s first undercover adventure took us on a journey from Marrakech to Mallorca via the snowy peaks of Switzerland, although producer Matthew Patnick promises even more jaw-dropping scenes this time around. We caught up with Matthew to get to the bottom of where series two of The Night Manager was filmed.
Before we delve into The Night Manager’s second adventure, could you give us a brief overview of the locations we saw back in 2016?
We begin in Marrakech at the Es Saadi Palace, which was the main hotel that we used. Marrakech is also where we filmed the uprising. We then go into the desert where Roper’s army is based. We went to Zermatt for the opening sequence, which was incredible. We were only there for a few days with Pine at the Riffelalp Hotel. And then we travelled to Roper’s main villa and other key locations. And then we just flip between the two. So it’s a split between Marrakech and Casablanca, where we went for a couple of days.
