Wolf Moon ushers in Umdloti’s first full moon hike of 2026

Hikers from across KwaZulu-Natal gathered on Saturday evening for Umdloti’s first full moon walk of the year, stepping into the Sibaya Coastal Forest Reserve just as January’s Wolf Moon rose over the coastline.

A night walk guided by moonlight

Led by seasoned hiking guide Roland Smith of Durban Hiking and Adventures, a group of 17 participants set off at dusk on the guided night hike, which has become a monthly fixture on Umdloti’s outdoor calendar.

Designed to introduce locals to the coastline after dark, the walk offers a rare chance to experience the forest and beach in an entirely different light.

The 6km route winds through one of the province’s last remaining protected indigenous coastal forests before opening out onto the Umdloti shoreline. Here, the full moon reflects off the ocean, bathing the surf in a warm, yellow glow.

This colouring occurs shortly after moonrise, when atmospheric scattering filters out bluer light, allowing warmer tones to dominate.

Forest sightings and coastal surprises

Now in its third year, the Umdloti Full Moon Walk was created to offer something beyond the usual daytime hike. Along the way, participants may spot a buck moving through the forest, scan for scorpions and spiders using torches and UV lights, or watch ghost crabs dart across the sand.

When weather and sea conditions cooperate, the evening often ends with a relaxed beach picnic by lantern light. This final stop has helped make the hike especially popular with families and couples looking for an unusual night out.

“Our aim is simple: to get people moving, outdoors and connected to nature, and away from screens and distractions,” says Smith.

What you need to know

The Umdloti Full Moon Walk takes place once a month, starting at 6.30pm and running for approximately three hours. Tickets cost R199 per person, with discounted rates for children under 13. Bookings are available via Quicket.
